The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) commenced on a trial basis (trial sites were set up) around the country in 2013 and was fully rolled out nationally in July 2016.

In a nutshell, the role of NDIS is to empower all persons living with a disability with funds (or support) that will give them choice and control to purchase services in accordance with their goals, lifestyles and aspirations.

NDIS was established with the aim of investing in disabled people to help them take control of their lives, and to a great extent make them independent and help them build a better future for themselves.

Through the support it provides, NDIS seeks to empower persons with disability with the choice and control to obtain the assistance they need to see them become active participants in the community and to see them in gainful employment where possible. Who is Eligible for the NDIS?

The National Insurance Disability Agency (NDIA) is responsible for the implementation of the NDIS and they are the ones who determine an applicant’s eligibility for funding.

For a person to become eligible for NDIS support they must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a citizen of Australia or resident. Permanent visa holders are also eligible.
  • Must be under the age of 65 at the time of application
  • Should meet the specified disability or early intervention conditions.

Early intervention requirements include:

  • A child who is 6 years of age and under, who is experiencing developmental delay and because of this delay, the child needs extra help as compared to other children of the same age with communication, learning, motor skills or self-care
  • Having a permanent or lifelong impairment or condition.

NDIS service providers are organisations or people tasked with delivering products or a support to recipients of NDIS funding. The Advantages of using a registered provider is that they are audited and follow quality and safeguards and you have this assurance of using a registered provider.

The roles of NDIS service providers are varied and depend on the needs of the participant. As an NDIS provider, Beacon Support can provide a range of support and care services. Some of the roles may include:

  • Assistance with self-care activities and community access
  • Assistance with social and community participation (core supports)
  • Household support including grooming, preparing meals as well as cleaning and maintaining the home
  • Support for daily living including assistance in developing independence
  • Medication
  • Coordination with healthcare professionals
  • Transport to and from medical appointments
  • Personal grooming, and household tasks
  • Providing cost-efficient transportation services
  • Providing the equipment a participant needs in order to increase their access to the community
  • Helping a participant achieve personal milestones, through therapy and assessments.
